Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment

The Right Care at the Right Time Makes All the Difference.

At Team Orthodontics, we believe in setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles through proactive care. Two-phase treatment is a specialized approach that focuses on guiding jaw growth and addressing dental issues early, followed by a second phase to fine-tune and perfect the alignment of the teeth. This comprehensive approach ensures long-term success and minimizes the need for more invasive treatments in the future.

A Smarter Path to a Healthier Smile

Two-phase treatment isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing things at the right time. By working with a child’s natural growth rather than waiting for problems to fully develop, we can accomplish things that simply aren’t possible once growth is complete.

Two-phase treatment is designed to:

Prevent Complex Issues

By addressing problems early, we can avoid the need for more invasive treatments, such as extractions or jaw surgery.

Guide Proper Jaw Development

Ensures the jaws grow in harmony, promoting a balanced facial profile.

Reduce Treatment Time in Phase Two

Early intervention often leads to shorter and simpler treatment during the second phase.

Improve Long-Term Stability

A healthy, well-aligned smile is more likely to stay that way with proper early care.

Phase One: Early Intervention

This phase typically begins when a child is around six to ten years old, while their jaw is still growing and most responsive to gentle guidance. The goal of Phase One is not to finish the smile — it’s to create the right foundation for it. We focus on addressing issues such as:

  • Severe crowding or spacing of teeth
  • Misaligned bites — including overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Jaw growth problems or skeletal imbalances
  • Oral habits like thumb-sucking that may affect dental and jaw development

During Phase One, we may use braces, expanders, or other orthodontic appliances to guide proper jaw growth and create the space permanent teeth need to erupt correctly. This reduces the risk of more serious dental problems later and ensures a healthy foundation heading into Phase Two.

There’s a real, time-sensitive window here. During the years of active growth, bone is still forming and the jaws respond readily to guidance. Addressing skeletal concerns during this window — rather than after growth is complete — can make the difference between a simple appliance now and a surgical procedure later.

Phase Two: Comprehensive Alignment

Once all permanent teeth have erupted — typically around age 11 to 14 — Phase Two begins. This phase focuses on refining the alignment of the teeth and ensuring a properly functioning bite. Braces or clear aligners are commonly used during this stage to bring everything into its final, finished position: a straight, beautiful, stable smile.

Because Phase One addressed the underlying jaw structure, Phase Two is often shorter and more straightforward than a single-phase treatment would have been. The hard work was done when it mattered most — during growth.

Between the two phases, most patients enter a supervised resting period. We continue to monitor the eruption of permanent teeth and overall development, so we always know exactly when the time is right to begin Phase Two. You won’t be left to wonder — we’ll guide you through every transition.

Is Two-Phase Treatment Right for Your Child?

Every child’s orthodontic needs are unique, and two-phase treatment isn’t the right path for everyone. At Team Orthodontics, we never recommend it unless there is a genuine clinical reason to do so.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 — not because treatment always begins then, but because that’s when a trained eye can identify whether early intervention would be beneficial. During this evaluation, Dr. Danyluk will assess your child’s dental and jaw development, review their growth patterns, and give you a clear, honest picture of what he sees.

Signs that a child may benefit from Phase One treatment include:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing or airway concerns
  • Thumb sucking or other oral habits beyond age 5
  • Crowding, spacing, or teeth that appear noticeably out of place
  • A jaw that shifts, clicks, or appears off-center
  • An underbite, crossbite, or significant overbite
  • A narrow upper jaw or visibly crowded smile

If your child shows any of these signs — or if they simply haven’t had an orthodontic evaluation yet — a consultation is a straightforward, no-pressure first step.

Setting Every Child Up for a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles

At Team Orthodontics, we’re committed to giving every child the best start on their orthodontic journey. Two-phase treatment reflects a broader philosophy: that the best outcomes come from seeing the whole patient — their development, their airway, their growth patterns, and their long-term health — not just the alignment of their teeth today.

When early treatment is the right call, it’s recommended with a complete picture in mind and a clear plan behind it. When it isn’t necessary, we’ll tell you that too — and we’ll keep monitoring development until the timing is right. Either way, your child will have a team that’s paying attention every step of the way.
