Airway Health & Sleep-Disordered Breathing

Creating Smiles, Changing Lives, From the Inside Out.

At Team Orthodontics, we believe a truly healthy smile does more than look beautiful — it supports the way you breathe, sleep, and live. That’s because the way you breathe, especially at night, has a profound impact on your health, your development, and your quality of life. Dr. Danyluk is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and incorporates airway screening as part of every comprehensive orthodontic evaluation.

What Is Sleep-Disordered Breathing?

Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) is an umbrella term for a range of conditions, including Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), in which breathing is repeatedly disrupted during sleep. These disruptions prevent the body from reaching the deep, restorative sleep stages it needs — and the consequences can show up in ways many people would never connect to their airway.

SDB is more common than most people realize, and it’s often underdiagnosed — particularly in children, where the signs can easily be mistaken for behavioral or developmental issues. At Team Orthodontics, we use evidence-based screening tools to identify patients who may benefit from a deeper evaluation, and we guide families through every step of the process.

Could Your Child Have an Airway Problem?

Many of the signs of sleep-disordered breathing in children are easy to overlook — or to attribute to something else entirely. If your child experiences any of the following, an airway evaluation is a simple, noninvasive first step that could make a significant difference.

Signs of sleep-disordered breathing in children:

  • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
  • Mouth breathing (at rest or while asleep)
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Bedwetting beyond typical age
  • Restless sleep or difficulty waking in the morning
  • Daytime fatigue, irritability, or mood swings
  • Difficulty focusing or behavioral challenges — sometimes misattributed to ADHD
  • Chronic congestion or frequent ear infections

The earlier an airway concern is identified, the more we can do. During the years of active growth and development, the jaws and airway are still forming — which means there is a real, time-sensitive window to guide development in a healthier direction. Early orthodontic intervention, including palate expansion and jaw development protocols, can open the airway during growth and reduce or eliminate the need for more involved treatment down the road.

Adults Struggle Too — and Often Don't Know It

Sleep-disordered breathing doesn’t go away on its own in adults. If anything, it often goes unrecognized for years while quietly affecting health, energy, mood, and quality of life.

Common signs of sleep-disordered breathing in adults:

  • Loud or chronic snoring
  • Waking frequently throughout the night
  • Waking unrefreshed despite a full night of sleep
  • Persistent daytime fatigue or brain fog
  • Morning headaches or dry mouth
  • Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
  • Mood changes, anxiety, or depression
  • Elevated blood pressure or cardiovascular concerns
  • Teeth grinding or jaw tension

Orthodontic treatment in adults can play a meaningful role in managing airway concerns. In some cases, oral appliance therapy may also provide a comfortable, effective option — either as an alternative to CPAP therapy or as part of a broader treatment plan coordinated with your medical team.

A Comprehensive Approach to Airway Care

You'll Never Navigate This Alone

At Team Orthodontics, we don’t look at airway health in isolation — and we don’t treat our patients that way either. Dr. Danyluk has developed a coordinated network of trusted outside specialists across sleep medicine, ENT, allergy, myofunctional therapy, and oral surgery. When your care extends beyond orthodontics, we bring the right experts in.

What makes our approach different is how that coordination happens. Our team serves as your central point of contact — communicating with specialists on your behalf, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks, and guiding you seamlessly from evaluation to treatment to outcome. You won’t be handed a referral and left to figure out the rest. You’ll have a team behind you the entire way.

This is the concierge level of care we extend to every patient at Team Orthodontics, and it’s never more important than when you’re navigating something as meaningful as your health.

Please note: We kindly ask that all patients complete a full evaluation and assessment with Dr. Danyluk before being connected with our specialist network. This ensures that any referral is part of a thoughtful, comprehensive plan. Orthodontics is often a key component of the overall treatment, and we want every patient to have the full picture before moving forward.

Why Your Orthodontist Should Be Part of This Conversation

The position of your teeth, the development of your jaws, and the size and shape of your airway don’t exist independently of one another — they’re deeply interconnected. A narrow upper jaw can restrict nasal airflow. A lower jaw that sits too far back can contribute to airway collapse during sleep. Addressing a bite problem without considering the airway may mean missing the bigger picture — and vice versa.

Dr. Danyluk’s membership in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, combined with his expertise in orthodontic jaw development, puts Team Orthodontics in a unique position to treat the whole patient — not just the smile.
